Why historical targets matter when reviewing old food logs

A past day should be judged against the target that was active on that day. Applying today’s calories and macros to old logs can rewrite the meaning of an earlier phase and create false adherence problems.

Tracking history only makes sense if the plan has history too. If you were eating against a 2,400-calorie maintenance target in June and later changed to a 2,050-calorie cut, a 2,300-calorie day from June should not suddenly be labeled 250 calories over target just because today’s plan is lower.

Targets are time-dependent context

A calorie or macro target is not a permanent property of a food log. It is a plan that applies during a particular period. Goals change, body weight changes, training phases change, and users may deliberately switch between recommended and manual targets.

If the target changes but historical analysis keeps only the newest value, the app loses the ability to answer a basic question: “How closely did I follow the plan I had at the time?” That makes old adherence metrics less trustworthy even if the food entries themselves are perfectly preserved.

Worked example: a mid-month target change

Suppose August 1–15 uses a 2,300-calorie target. On August 16, the user intentionally changes to 2,050 kcal. An August 10 intake of 2,250 kcal was 50 calories below the active plan. An August 20 intake of 2,250 kcal was 200 calories above the new plan.

If a history screen later compares both days with the current 2,050-calorie target, August 10 is falsely rewritten from “slightly below target” to “200 calories over.” The food did not change. The target context did. A historical snapshot prevents that reinterpretation.

Calories are not the only target that can change

The same problem applies to protein, carbohydrate, fat, and goal phase. A user may keep calories stable but raise protein and lower carbohydrate. A past day should be assessed against the macro split that existed then, not the split that exists now.

Historical physiology context can matter too. When a product uses a current TDEE or profile estimate to interpret old behavior, later changes in weight or activity can make the historical comparison misleading. fitmacros therefore treats daily target and physiology snapshots as part of the context coverage for a range.

Decision framework: what to use when reviewing an old day

A historical review should resolve context in this order.

  • Use the target snapshot attached to that day when it exists.
  • Use the physiology or TDEE context attached to the day when the analysis depends on those values.
  • If a historical snapshot is missing, make the fallback visible rather than pretending the original plan is known.
  • Reduce confidence in range-level conclusions when a large share of days lack their original context.
  • Do not compare days from different target phases as though one target governed the entire period.

What would change the conclusion?

A day that looks poorly aligned under the current target may become well aligned once its historical target is restored. The reverse can also happen: a day that appears fine under a higher current maintenance target may have been meaningfully above a lower cut target at the time.

Range-level conclusions can also change when the analysis is split around a target transition. Instead of asking whether the whole month averaged close to one target, it may be more informative to evaluate the first phase against its target and the second phase against the new one.

Common mistakes in historical review

The most common mistake is applying today’s target retrospectively to every past day. Another is averaging a month across a major target change without preserving which days belonged to which plan. A third is assuming that missing historical target data can be reconstructed perfectly from memory.

It is also easy to compare an old food log with a new calculator recommendation and conclude that the earlier plan was wrong. The recommendation may have changed because the profile, body weight, activity selection, or goal changed. Historical analysis should describe the plan that existed before judging whether it was effective.

When not to act

Do not make a strong adherence or coaching judgment about an old period when most historical target context is missing. A fallback to today’s target may be necessary for display, but it should not be treated as equivalent to the original snapshot.

Do not rewrite past targets simply to make the historical chart look cleaner. If the old plan was imperfect, preserving it is still more useful because it allows later review to distinguish what was planned from what actually happened.
